15 May 1948
Dearest Hildegard, I know you have been wondering what I have been so secretive about these last few weeks, well by the time you receive this letter it will not be a secret any longer. If you recall I once told you of my meeting a man named Emad Abdel-Halim in Cairo back in 1942, Emad contacted me recently with an offer to fly for the Egyptians against the Israelis. Although it's been a couple of years, I know we need the money. Please don't worry, as this will be a short war for me. I plan only to stay long enough for us to purchase a small farm, and I will be back in Germany before you know it. Enclosed is my first paycheck along with a picture of Schnitzel and me with my new jet fighter. Your loving husband, Gunter Kaufmann |
