This photo set suggests a way to honor our friends and relatives in
the armed forces. This custom figure represents my brother who received a
Bronze Star for his actions in Desert Shield/ Desert Storm as an Army captain.
Believe it or not the SAM figure looks enough like my brother to be a custom
head sculpt of him...I really lucked out. I made the base from a craft wood
plaque and some fine gravel (there is actually more gravel than sand in the gulf
region deserts). The spent shell casings are brass and black colored craft
beads. I made the pistol lanyard from craft floss and electrical wire insulation.
The figure’s equipment is chosen from actual photos of my brother in Saudi
Arabia. I offered to remove the GI JOE patches from the uniform, but my
brother liked the figure just as it is. He is posed inspecting a captured AK47 on
the battlefield. The engraved brass plate can be purchased from any trophy
store for about $3.50 including the engraving. My brother’s name has been
obscured from view at his request. A piece of green floral wire secured in the
base and slipped under the back of the jacket holds the figure upright on the
base. The last photo shows the figure on display in my brother’s home with
some of his other Desert Storm trophies. I presented this figure to my brother
last year on his birthday.
